In a feisty local preseason friendly at Ashgrove Park, Markethill Swifts squared off against Loughgall Seconds, both teams eager to make a mark ahead of the upcoming season. Markethill, missing key players Jamie, Sydney, Caie, and Oscar could of helped the squad. As, their absence was keenly felt, particularly in the early exchanges, as they could have added more creativity and sharpness upfront. However the lads up there still give it there absolute all on the night.

As the first half wore on, Markethill began to find their rhythm and created some promising opportunities. Still, neither side could break the deadlock, and the half ended 0-0, with both teams showing flashes of quality.

The second half saw Markethill Swifts emerge with renewed vigor, controlling possession and pushing forward with purpose. They created several glorious chances to take the lead but were unable to convert, with Loughgall defending resiliently to keep them at bay. Despite missing some key attackers, the Swifts’ effort and determination were evident as they continued to press for a breakthrough.

With just 10 minutes left on the clock, Loughgall earned a corner. A well-delivered cross into the box found a Loughgall player, who rose highest to head the ball towards goal. Lewis Harpur, stationed on the goal line, made a valiant attempt to clear but couldn’t prevent the ball from crossing the line, giving Loughgall a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes from time, Daniel Graham made a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Loughgall a second goal, keeping Markethill in the contest. Markethill pushed hard in the final minutes, desperately seeking an equalizer, but the Loughgall defense held firm.

The game ended 1-0 to Loughgall Seconds, who secured a hard-fought victory. Tom and Alex Berry were standout performers for Markethill, keeping their opponents quiet throughout the match. The two teams will meet again in a month’s time in the league, setting up an eagerly anticipated rematch.
